Job Description:
We are looking for a Founding Elixir Engineer to build the core banking and payments infrastructure powering Empay. You’ll join as one of the first engineers, helping define how we design, build, and scale from scratch.

What You’ll Be Doing:

• Design and develop Elixir-based banking and payment systems
• Build payment integrations with UK & EU providers, Visa/Mastercard
• Create performant APIs for fast, reliable data flows
• Develop pipelines for real-time compliance and risk monitoring
• Scale our card issuing and loyalty infrastructure
• Implement payment routing, account logic, and payment initiation
• Own features end-to-end — architecture, testing, deployment, monitoring
• Collaborate with front-end, product, and design teams

Technical Challenges:

• Scale for 100,000+ transactions per month from day one
• Support multi-country and multi-currency operations
• Ensure secure processing of sensitive financial data
• Balance performance, security, and resilience in infrastructure

Our Stack:
Elixir, PostgreSQL, APIs, payment rails (Visa/Mastercard), open banking integrations (Salt Edge, GoCardless), data pipelines, real-time systems

Requirements:

• 5–6 years building fintech/lending/banking backend systems
• Strong experience with Elixir in production environments
• Hands-on experience with open banking platforms (Salt Edge, Tink, GoCardless, etc.)
• Knowledge of high-throughput transaction systems
• Solid PostgreSQL and data architecture skills
• Understanding of financial systems and risk decisioning

Nice to Have:

• Experience at fintech companies like Revolut, Wise, Monzo, Curve
• Background scaling consumer products to 100,000+ users
• Familiarity with UK & EU payment systems
• Experience as a founding engineer (0 → 1 product journey)
